Extrusions, Scaling, and Glasses
honestly stressed over not being able to physically model for the past couple of days as I prepared for a work-related event. I went to Michigan on Monday and didn't have a chance to practice my rad 3D modeling skills. Although I did bring my laptop and mouse just in case I found some time! But to make a long story short, I didn't find the time haha.
What I did instead was watch a great short video on how to make a wine glass. It was a simple Blender exercise with CG Essentials. I watched the video a few days ago and figured that once I got home, I'd try it out myself. So, here we are! The wine glass was relatively simple to create. I made it out of a cylinder, 8 loop cuts, and the subdivision surface modifier. I then got inspired to create the fanciest glass of them all - the coupe! This was a pretty low-effort modeling session. I now want to make even more glasses hah - maybe an entire fancy collection of cocktail glasses?
When making the glasses hollow, I learned that one method to do so was to extrude the top face and then scale it inwards. After scaling inwards, I could then use extrude again and move the extrusion downwards. After moving it down, I could scale once again to shape the vertices in alignment with the shape of the glass. I continued that method until I reached the bottom of the glass. It was a pretty cool technique, actually!

The only thing that I couldn't figure out was how to change the inside color of the glass. There weren't faces created for the interior, therefore, I couldn't give the inside a different color. Not that it was important but I at least wanted to see how that would look.
I also used the Z shortcut a lot to switch between wireframe and solid mode. I feel like I'm getting so much better with the shortcuts!
What I was about to leave out was my attempt to make a glass material for the glasses. Ya'll, I tried 3-4 tutorials and eventually gave up. I didn't like the techniques that were being demonstrated. Plus, I wanted colored glass. That's what I get for getting ahead of myself to learn more about creating materials.

Ya'll, I'm so proud of my yellow seat! Last night, I took a new approach and followed the modeling style of Blender Magic. There's a Blender Chair Modeling Tutorial available on their channel which helped me with creating this chair. Prior to starting that tutorial, I watched Blender Guru's chair modeling series which was split between multiple ~20 min videos that provided a more in-depth approach to explaining how to model. I found that reviewing both was pretty useful.

Loop Cuts and Keyboards
I actually loved my day 2 so much! It's got me pumped for day 3. Okay, so I spent the evening reviewing a video on Loop Cuts. Not much to say about that but I did learn something I didn't know before about Loop Cut & Slide. You can slide a vertex along connected edges or a singular edge without distorting the geometry of the model! To do so, the shortcut is G + G. I also learned that loop cuts stop at triangles or n-gons because it's not obvious which direction to go next!
