Blender Navigation and Sushi
o matter how many times I do the basic overview of how to navigate Blender, I find myself learning something new. Go figure.
For Day 1 of my 100 Days of Blender, I chose to start with reviewing basic navigation. Yanno, the simple stuff like how to move around the scene and all the shortcuts for changing the viewing angle. I hadn't realized until today that I've been trying to pan with the mouse incorrectly this entire time. For context, when I've tried to pan in the past, I clicked down the mouse scroll wheel and dragged the mouse. WRONG! You're actually supposed to press Shift + Mouse Scroll Wheel. After doing those combinations, you can move the mouse around to pan. Who knew?!
For non-numpad use, I learned about using the ~ key to bring up the view options. And if you swipe fast towards one of the options, it switches to the view without having to actually click the mouse button!
I revisited Polygon Runway's Sushi tutorial as a refresh to box modeling. Of all the shortcuts I took note of, the main ones I want to note are the following:
- Use Alt+E to bring up the extrude menu. And if you want even thickness, then click S.
- You can move the cursor to any location with Shift + Right Click. That's super useful when adding new primitives to a specific location.
- The View Modes menu can be accessed with Z. That actually because helpful at one point given that my screen size was smushed and I couldn't see all the buttons in the top toolbar.
Modeling the sushi was cool. I took some creative freedom to choose shades of color different than what was presented in the tutorial. I did have a weird clipping issue when putting the camera in orthographic mode and adjusting the render size. Not sure what that was about but I'm sure I'll figure things out later down the road.
I'm feeling pretty pumped about this journey. I know that it's just the first day but I'm on a 'this is new' high!

Verts are Friends
I truly feel as though I've peaked within my 2 weeks of committing to modeling daily! I felt so overwhelmed with accomplishment after completing this render that I decided to take a day to myself away from publishing a biog post. But naturally, I was sure to share this creation with social media! This has got to be the most polished thing I've created with Blender in all my months of getting familiar with the editor.
